Saving our Koalas

How you can help

Depending on childs age and sensitivity you may wish to read them the background information below under ‘background’, or otherwise simply let them know that Koalas need our help and one way we can help is to ask the government to protect their habitat.

Invite your child to colour in this Koala (they may like to add habitat too - drawing leaves and more branches, or perhaps stick some real leaves on). Ask your child if they would like to include a message - you or your child might like to write it on the artwork or otherwise you could include the text in an email or social media post.

Ideas for messages - personal is always best but if you need a hand something simple like:

Dear Minister/Premier/other, please act urgently on all 42 recommendations from the NSW koala inquiry report. After the recent bushfires, koala habitat and forests need protection now more than ever. Thank you for your time and care.

To increase the impact of your work please share this with your friends and family.

I would also love to create a collage of all the coloured and collaged Koalas everyone makes so if you’re happy to share your Koala with me i would love to see it and if i receive enough i will make a lovely big collage that we can then use to make greater impact. Imagine one image of 100 or more little coloured Koalas! Such an image would let the Minister, Premier and others know how many people care, in just one second!

Background

I recently received an email from NSW’s Nature Conservation Council (NCC) about a parliamentary inquiry into koalas in NSW. The email shared:

  • Koalas are on track to be extinct in the wild in NSW by 2050 unless urgent action is taken.

  • The accompanying report to the parliamentary inquiry details 42 recommendations to save Koalas. All sides of politics have agreed to implement these. How fantastic!

NCC strongly encourages anyone who cares about the Koalas to contact the appropriate decision makers, in particular Minister Matt Kean and Premier Berejiklian, and ask them to implement all of the report’s 42 recommendations.

Thousands of people made submissions to the inquiry that resulted in the significant report above. The actions of these people helped shine a light on the problems koalas are facing. Now we need as many people as possible to ensure the government implements the solutions. That’s where you come in!

Thanks so much and happy Koala Artivisming!
